The powerplug is developed by VERWEIJ Amplifying Acoustics, a Dutch company led by luthier Jan Verweij who has made the amplifying of acoustic stringed instruments his main expertise.
"In the late eighties, with the popularity of the classical guitar at its height, many luthiers were looking for a way to build a 'big' sounding guitar. A guitar that could compete with a symphony orchestra, a guitar with the dynamics of a piano. After many experiments I concluded that even the loudest guitar would not be able to fulfill these demands. This problem needed another solution: amplification. My first customers were the famous Amsterdam Guitar Trio who wanted the guarantee to be heard under all circumstances during their second tour in America. For them I developed the Guitar Intensifier to make their sound bigger without noticeable change in character."
"The nineties showed a growing popularity of acoustic instruments in
popular music, many artists recording their hits in a new 'unplugged'
version. The combination of acoustic instruments with electric guitars,
drums and bass meant a new challenge. While many amplifying systems made
concessions to the warmth and transparency of an acoustic instrument, I
chose for maximum sound quality. This led to the combination of a pick-up
and a microphone in a two-way amplification system, the PM-system, which is
being used for over a decade now by an ever-growing group of musicians."
